The 38 Sounds in Direction is a pregnant
audio installation, in form characterised by an absorbed and meditative
feeling, demonstrating the great number of directions and attitudes that
human beings are faced with.
Out of two sound-projectors, two voices are heard simultanepusly; one man´s
voice and one woman´s voice. They echo each other. At regular intervals
these voices proclaim the choice of directions with which we are recurrently
confronted; unreservedly and without exhortation. The words that are read
- with methodical and formal regularity - are randomly composited in groups
of words. The 38 Sounds in Direction is a closed piece of text
- without any literary ambitions - with no dissolutions.
The 38 Sounds in Direction is a balance act between the sound
of a voice and silence/keeping silent. After every group of words follows
compact silence; a suspension of silence. The voice is to be understood
as a stand taken against the background of silence. A silence which is
mechanically and physiologically interrupted by the sound of voices which
represents a condition for percption; the silence is broken by the words
with a person and purpose behind them. This is the silence which is found
only in the human world and only for the human being, where the voice is
the immediate result of the physical action; to speak.
The sound-projectors are distinguised by a wide frequency range and
high efficiency, which represent the voice in a very distinct and clear
way. The sound which is created conveys a palpable feeling of physical
presence in the room.
38 Sounds in Direction was first
played on Radio Pica, Barcelona, Spain, 1994.
